Do people still conform when they are alone, in their own space, without anyone watching? Social cohesion is important to the masses, and a sense of guilt or shame—even in one’s own isolated mind—is powerful. Conformity becomes a necessity to avoid feelings of shame. If individuals act according to the social norms of their society, they must rigorously believe their actions to be right, whether in the presence of others or at home.
This manifests in several ways. First, there is the enforced, somewhat conscious scheme, seen most clearly in totalitarian regimes. Second, conformity is driven by religious delusion, where individuals adhere to perceived divine scrutiny. Lastly, there is a more passive, unconscious conformity, where no explicit rules exist, yet individuals feel compelled to conform in solitude, just as they would in public.
The Totalitarian Way: The most extreme example of this is found in highly totalitarian states, such as North Korea. If one deviates from the collective mindset, or shows any hint of dissent, harsh repercussions follow, affecting not just the individual but their entire social network. In North Korea, for example, a deviant’s family and friends also suffer. This creates a culture of fear, eroding trust among groups, compelling people to conform under all circumstances.
The Delusional Way: This form of solitary conformity is evident in the deeply religious. It occupies a middle ground between passive and totalitarian conformity. While there may be no real-world consequences for deviancy, as there would be in an authoritarian state, these individuals are driven by the belief that a divine being—omnipresent and all-seeing—watches their every move. This delusion of constant surveillance by a higher power compels them to conform to the doctrines of their faith, even when alone.
The Passive Way: Passive conformity applies to general societal norms, mores, and folkways. For instance, even in the privacy of their home, men in the West may feel ashamed or ridiculous for dressing in ways associated with women’s gender norms. Similarly, individuals who identify strongly with a subculture may recoil at the thought of deviating from its norms. A staunch Metalhead, for example, surrounded by thrash, death, or black metal posters, is unlikely to explore pop music on their streaming app. This stems from a collective narcissism, where individuals believe their subculture is superior to others.
If someone does something that deviates from their group’s norms and is then discovered, they risk being shunned. Thus, they avoid deviant behaviour entirely. If they believe others would disapprove of their actions in public, they may also experience guilt and shame for doing the same thing in private.
For example, a person who commits murder will conceal it, knowing that beyond being shunned, they will face severe legal consequences. This same dynamic applies to more trivial actions that fall outside social norms, though the consequences are less extreme. To conclude, all of this encapsulates what I call Internalised Solitary Conformity (ISC). In essence, ISC is the largely unconscious behaviour of self-imposed conformity, driven by internalised societal pressures.
