Sociality would see massive improvements if the world were rid of alcohol. The level of intoxication and long-term damage alcohol causes is equivalent to that of many dangerous recreational drugs. The only ludicrous difference is that one is legal, and others are not.
People who have to rely on alcohol to have fun are truly boring when sober, yet they’d have you think otherwise. Teenagers see it as a rite of passage, so they hang out at a park or a friend’s house when the parents are not home, throw a party, and decide, for the first time, to douse their oesophagus with alcohol. As I have mentioned in my short essay, “The Illusion of Adulthood”, teenagers want to feel and appear grown-up, so they replicate what the grown-ups are doing. They get a car, with little significant need, before they can even afford one. They try to get fake IDs to get inside a club at 17 when the entry age is 18. They try to lose their virginity faster than they can graduate college, or even secondary school, in some cases. They light their cigarettes behind the science block, hoping teachers won’t catch them. And all this, with the desire for their first piss-up.
The defenders of alcohol say, “You are no fun for not drinking”; yet at concerts and other live events, I have enjoyed myself, while those defending booze can barely remember what they experienced the night before. The following morning, they are kneeling over a toilet vomiting, painfully anticipating lying in bed with a pounding headache all day. Seeing people wobble around, not remembering, being sick, being unpleasant, passing out, hungover, ruining the show for themselves and others who have to deal with them. People are so fearful of how they look to others that they have to intoxicate themselves to “loosen up,” a regurgitated phrase I have heard many booze defenders say when trying to justify their excuse to conform to collective drinking at social gatherings.
The hypocrisy of alcohol’s legality is glaring. Society condemns other substances that cause similar or even lesser harm, yet alcohol is celebrated, advertised, and readily available. This double standard is not only absurd, but dangerous. It perpetuates a culture where self-destruction is normalised and even encouraged.
Alcohol dependency is a vicious cycle. It starts with social drinking, often under peer pressure, and gradually becomes a crutch for dealing with life’s challenges. This “social lubricant” quickly turns into a chain that binds individuals to a life of dependency, health issues, and social problems. The irony is that the very substance people turn to for social ease often leads to social isolation and personal ruin. I await the day where this ludicrous status quo is rethought. Imagine a world where social interactions are genuine, unclouded by the haze of intoxication. A world where people don’t need to poison themselves to feel accepted or to have a good time. The benefits to public health, safety, and overall quality of life would be immense.
