On Political Commentary

Politics, economics and world affairs are out of my control. Whilst I indulged in political affairs when I was younger, beyond my ability to vote in elections, such things are now of less concern to me. As an observer of political issues of the 21st century, I aim to seek nuance whilst still acknowledging values that are fundamental to a free society such as free expression and similar concepts.

I feel Winston Churchill remarked correctly in that, of the political systems, democracy is the lesser of all evils. There is no perfect political system but democracy is the best we have. What makes the democratic process flawed is the very fact that it requires the trust of the masses; trusting my fellow man is something I will always struggle to do. Ordinary human thinking is driven by biases, fallacies, emotional reasoning and social normative influence. I rather take the Stoic approach, and that is to let go of what I have little influence in.

One may have opinions and preferences in political affairs but I acknowledge that I am merely an observing citizen beyond the ballot box. Not to partake, but to vote on what translates from my own personal ethics.
