Fads die out quicker than staples or mainstays. Staples or mainstays are items, or trends that have become so commonplace that they are now considered essential. However, the future of a staple is not definitive. For example, flares are a fad that will die out quicker than leggings, which have become a staple in many wardrobes. Leggings are widely accepted and used, almost essential, but might eventually fade away over a longer period than flares. Similarly, pagers were a fad that did not have a long shelf life, quickly fading away and enabling the introduction of smartphones, which have become a staple since the 1990s. Smartphones are widely accepted and used, almost essential, but will not simply fade away; instead, they will evolve over a much longer period than pagers, almost akin to technological natural selection. This is what I will call a transistaple—a staple that is transient and will eventually transform into something new. This term blends “transient” and “transforming” with “staple”.
Initially, an unknown individual produces something of value that gains traction among a small group of people. In some cases, this group of people is more likely to be genuinely interested in that thing and thus would appreciate the individual who created it. I say “in some cases” when referring to this postulation as I do not want to naively express that human interests are always authentic—such optimism would be a massive error when referring to the collective mind of the human species.
Young people start new trends by bringing back something from 10, 20, or 30 years ago, then older generations follow. Then the young generation becomes cringed and they resurface another trend from the past, claiming it to be fresh and new again. This is how the trend cycle proceeds. Rarely is it authentic when done in this way. It takes decades or centuries for fashion trends to be almost entirely different from their predecessors.
Once this is realised by people of commonplace minds (the general public: a large group of fickle people who only ever follow popular conventions, fads, and trends), this then rapidly ascends the thing and the person who created it. Sadly, this interest is disingenuous as it is purely influenced by the idea of something being popular; therefore, it is erroneously perceived as good, and one must show public support for that thing or person as an act of conformity. The original enthusiasts then become tainted due to this exasperated, inauthentic rise in popularity for a thing or figure they appreciated before the bandwagon arrived—a bandwagon driven by the herd and with passengers consisting of the easily led.
The the conventionalists, which make up most of society, are hellbent on pursuing trends, popularity, status and are maintained by their herd mentality. These mindless minions become a total infestation of what starts out as authentic and unusual, making it into something mainstream and essentially corporatising it, like a wet rag oozing out any authenticity that was once there.
Their voracious desire for validation and acceptance drives them to either reject or homogenise anything that stands out, transforming unique expressions into diluted commodities. Distinctiveness is sacrificed on the altar of social approval, and what was once different and alternative becomes bland and uniform as a result of the sheep’s infestation, tailored to fit the narrow constraints of what is deemed newly acceptable by the collective. This phenomenon of social infestation, as I’d like to refer to it, not only stifles creativity, but also prolongs a culture of frivolity. The pursuit of trends over substance leads to a society where depth and meaning are dominated by the ephemeral magnetism of popularity.
